Daily Fantasy Hockey Value Update – January 8, 2014

Ottawa Senators at Colorado Avalanche

The Senators are trying to rebound from a very inconsistent first half of the season and are doing so nicely so far; Ottawa has won five of their last six games, including four in a row, to climb to within two points of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. One big reason for that is the play of Craig Anderson, who has put up a .919 save percentage since December 1 after posting an .894 save percentage up to that point.

Colorado has won three of their last four games despite the latest home hiccup to the lowly Calgary Flames, but a win tonight puts them seven points clear of the Minnesota Wild with two games in hand, and that would start putting the nail in the coffin of the Wild’s season.

Despite winning four in a row, the Ottawa power play has gone just 1-for-11 over that stretch, so their goal scoring is all coming at even strength, and coincidentally those four wins and those 13 even strength goals have all come in the absence of Jason Spezza. That’s pretty important because it’s likely that Spezza returns tonight for the Senators, and I’m not sure what that will do their current chemistry.

Special teams will probably decide this game, as the Avalanche power play has gone 6-for-13 over their last four games while the Senators penalty kill has killed off 19-of-20 short-handed chances over their last six games. Whichever team holds steady stands a good chance to win, and the edge goes to Colorado here.
