San Jose Sharks at Nashville Predators
The Sharks have been reeling for a little while now, and it has gone largely unnoticed. Over their last 17 games, the Sharks are 9-7-1 and four of those wins came in a shootout. On top of that, they learned that Logan Couture will be out up to four weeks with a hand injury. That’s bad news for them, as Couture had been one of their top players all season long.
Nashville is coming off a 2-1 loss in Carolina, their third straight loss (though first in regulation) and they now have just two wins in their last 10 games (2-4-3). The problem isn’t generating offense – they have outshot their opponents by an average of 10 shots over those last three losses – but rather it’s the nine goals they’ve allowed in those three losses, and the 36 goals they’ve allowed in their last 10 games. They desperately need Pekka Rinne back.
Marek Mazanec will get the start for Nashville tonight and he’s allowed 20 goals in his last six games out, one of which he was pulled. It’s not like Antti Niemi has been any better for San Jose, though, as he’s allowed 21 goals in his last seven games out, being pulled in his most recent outing.
The way the goalies are playing, and even if San Jose goes with backup Alex Stalock again tonight, this game could see six or seven goals. I will avoid the goalies and pick from the skaters.
