Calgary Flames at Colorado Avalanche
In what appears to be the best matchup of the night, the struggling Calgary Flames go to Denver tonight to face the Colorado Avalanche. Calgary has been shutout in three of their last four games and haven’t scored more than three goals in 14 straight games. Over those 14 games, the Flames have only scored five power play goals and have been operating at an 11.4-percent rate.
The Avalanche have won three games in a row and only have one regulation loss in their last eight games (4-1-3). One thing that has been nice to see over that stretch of games is the Colorado power play starting to come around: the Avalanche only scored one power play goal from November 23 – December 17 and have now scored eight such goals in their last eight games.
This will be the third meeting between these two teams this year, with the Avalanche taking the previous two by a score of 7-4. There are a lot of guys on point streaks too: Gabriel Landeskog has seven points in his last six games, Matt Duchene has two goals and 10 assists in his last nine games, and Ryan O’Reilly has four goals and four assists in his last eight games.
With Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie being a healthy scratch lately, both Jan Hejda and Andre Benoit have become good plays on the point. I will be stacking a lot of Avalanche tonight and starting goalie Jean-Sébastien Giguere is very cheap, too.
