Florida Panthers at Montréal Canadiens
The Panthers have had a very up-and-down year, which sounds about right for a young team. After starting December 7-2, they have gone 2-3-1 since (though that still gives them a good record of late). Both their scoring and goaltending have been inconsistent: In Florida’s last two wins, they scored eight goals and allowed five. In their last four losses, they scored seven goals and allowed 16 against.
The Habs themselves have also been very up-and-down, going 9-5-2 since December 1, but five of those wins came in the first seven games of that stretch. They also have an issue of keeping the puck out of their own net of late, as they’ve allowed 17 goals in their last four games, yet have still managed to grab half the points in those games (1-1-2).
Florida went into Montréal three weeks ago and skated away with a regulation 2-1 win. The only goal the Habs scored that game was on the power play, which sounds about right considering the Panthers are 29th in the NHL in penalty kill efficiency.
This game will come down to two things: If the Habs can capitalize on a couple of their power plays, they probably win. If they don’t, Florida is a good enough team at 5-on-5 to take their second game in a row at the Bell Centre. That’s easier said than done for Montréal seeing as the Panthers haven’t allowed a penalty kill goal in three straight games. I would expect another low-scoring game tonight.
