The verdict is in, and Mike Munchak is out as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans. His entire coaching staff is expected to be let go as well.
According to ESPN, Titans President and CEO Tommy Smith has decided to remove Munchak as coach after days of deliberation and reports indicating he would be retained.
On Friday, it was reported Munchak would remain on the sidelines for Tennessee. Earlier today, Smith said no decision was made regarding Munchak’s future. The team was reportedly willing to retain Munchak if he was willing to make changes to the coaching staff but the head coach refused.
Munchak registered a 22-26 mark as head coach since taking over for Jeff Fisher in 2011, including a 7-9 record in 2013. And during his tenure, the Titans were 2-20 against teams with winning records, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
Tennessee has failed to make the playoffs since 2008.
Smith took over control of the Titans from longtime owner Bud Adams last year, and earlier in the season reports surfaced that Smith wanted Munchak to make significant changes to his coaching staff and that numerous personnel changes would be coming.
The Titans, along with the Browns, Lions, Redskins and Vikings, are now on the lookout for a new head coach.
Penn State University is reportedly interested in Munchak for their head coaching job, recently vacated by Bill O’Brien who signed on with the Houston Texans earlier this week.
Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin has already been cited as a potential candidate to take over the head coach job. A hot name in coaching rumors right now, Franklin led Vandy to an 8-4 record this year and a 9-4 record last season. He has coached Vanderbilt since 2011 and previously served as the offensive coordinator at Kansas State and Maryland.
