Tampa Bay Lightning at Calgary Flames
For a team that was supposed to struggle without Steven Stamkos, they’ve gone 12-7-4 since he broke his leg and that includes going 3-3-1 against the West and 5-5-2 on the road. Considering what they lost, that’s pretty stellar.
Calgary went through December being pretty much what we knew they were, posting a 5-7-2 record for the month. They are on a tough stretch right now, too, with just one win in their last eight games and having been shutout in three of those. They have only scored one goal in their last three games.
It’s not like Calgary is just ending up on the wrong side of bad luck, or running into a streak of unbeatable teams; they’ve lost to the Rangers, Red Wings, and Oilers over those last eight games, and have averaged just 24.1 shots on goal over that span. In fact, were it not for their slightly subpar power play giving them a boost with two goals in that only win, they probably would have lost eight straight.
All this is to say that the signs are pointing to Tampa Bay. This is a Lightning team that went into Vancouver two days ago and handed the Canucks only their second regulation loss in a month. It could be a low-scoring 3-1 or 3-2 game, but I might be tempted with Ben Bishop if he indeed gets the nod tonight, even with his exorbitant price.
