Carolina Hurricanes at Washington Capitals
The Hurricanes have scored 18 goals in their last six contests, which is typically a good thing for a team. The downside is they’ve allowed 24 goals over that span, which has led to them going 1-3-2 over that stretch. In fact, this team only has two wins in their last 10 games, allowing four goals or more in six of those games.
Washington’s big news is the “demotion” of Alex Ovechkin to the “second line”. I must say, I don’t think it matters what line you put Ovechkin on, whatever line he’s playing on is their first line. Sure, he’s gone four straight games without a point, but he has 31 shots on goal in those four games. It’s not like he’s not trying to score, or hasn’t had the chances, players just go on these stretches sometimes.
The last time these two teams met was on December 20, which resulted in a 4-2 win for Washington, in Carolina. That game saw three power play goals for the Capitals, which guided them to the win even though Carolina dominated play at five on five. Carolina could win tonight, but they’ll have to stay out of the box against this lethal power play. Carolina will also have newly-acquired John-Michael Liles in the lineup tonight.
None of the three games these two teams have played have been exceedingly high scoring, averaging just 5.33 total goals in those games. I would side Carolina here, but it’s far from a sure thing. I’d rather just take a couple value plays and leave the rest of the players alone.
