NHL Midseason Awards: Ryan Getzlaf Early Favorite for MVP

Ryan Getzlaf

Selke Trophy – Most Outstanding Defensive Forward

Winner: Patrice Bergeron

Patrice Bergeron has been a yearly favorite for the Selke Trophy for a few years now, and his first-half performance has him looking worthy of a second win. The 2012 Selke recipient has won a league-leading 506 faceoffs on the year, and his 61.8 percent success rate at the dot is the best of any player with more than 400 drops. Bergeron also continues to be a plus-minus machine with a plus-17 rating, and his efforts on the penalty kill have helped Boston shutdown 87.1 percent of opposing powerplays.

Runnner Up: Jonathan Toews

The defending Selke winner is very much in the hunt for a repeat title. Toews ranks fourth in the league with 465 faceoff wins, and his plus-16 rating nearly matches Bergeron’s. More offensively prolific than most Selke candidates, Toews is the best two-way player in the game today. Expect him to be a perennial finalist in this category for years to come.
