Colorado Avalanche at Chicago Blackhawks
Colorado was only 1-1-2 in their final four games heading into the Christmas break, but their power play did go 5-for-15 in those games, having not scored one on the man advantage for 11 straight games before that. Of course, that was balanced out by a paltry 72.7-percent penalty kill, which lent a hand in losing three of four.
Chicago, despite losing three straight earlier this month, have scored a power play goal in 11 of their last 12 contests, going 15-for-49 over that stretch (30.6-percent). In their last eight games, they have scored fewer than three goals just once, scoring 35 total goals over that stretch. Their scoring is prolific, and there’s no reason to think it will slow down tonight.
The interesting thing about this matchup is that Colorado already beat the Blackhawks 5-1 a little over a month ago, in Colorado. Although, that can be a bit misleading: Chicago outshot them by 14 and Varlamov saved 36 of 37 shots. You can’t give a team like Chicago that many opportunities to score two games in a row and expect to win them both.
This should be high-scoring, but I do expect Chicago to win out in the end.
