New York Rangers at Washington Capitals
These two teams met earlier this month in New York, and that game saw the Rangers get trounced 4-1. What was curious about that game, though, was that all the goals were scored by secondary scorers. The Stepan line and the Ovechkin line were matched against each other pretty much the whole game, as was Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh. The Rangers were able to stifle Ovechkin, who saw his shot attempt rate drop about 20-percent from his season norms due to these matchups, but not the rest of the team.
For whatever reason, the Rangers are much better away from home, as they are just one of five teams in the Eastern Conference to be at least two games above .500 while on the road. Over their last six road games, they are 4-2-0, albeit they haven’t played away from MSG in over three weeks due to an extended home stand.
The Capitals rely heavily on their power play, as about one-third of their goals this year are on the PP and that’s a lot – last year, it was about 26.8-percent of all goals. Over their last seven games, it’s been over 43-percent of their goals scored. This is important because the Rangers are sixth in the NHL this year on the penalty kill overall and have gone over 86-percent this month.
