San Jose Sharks at Phoenix Coyotes
After starting December just 1-3-1, the Sharks finished the month 4-2 to finish above .500 and help keep themselves near the top of the Western Conference. Don’t let those four wins in six games fool you too much, though: San Jose had an even goal differential over those six games (16-16) and won two of them in a shootout.
Phoenix has gone 4-3-3 in the month of December so far, and the power play is just 14.3-percent in those games. San Jose has been a bit better this month, coming in at 17.5-percent, but neither has been exactly shooting the lights out with the man advantage.
This is only the second meeting between these two teams this year, but the first one was both these teams’ second game of the year, and a lot has changed since then.
A reminder that San Jose rookie Tomas Hertl is out with a knee injury, and probably will be for quite some time. This injury moved Joe Pavelski to the top line with Brent Burns and Joe Thornton, while Tommy Wingels was put on the second line with Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture. This also got Wingels onto the second power play unit consistently.
