New York Islanders at Detroit Red Wings
If you can, sometimes the best way to gauge a matchup is by looking at previous games in the same season. Well, the Red Wings beat the Islanders 5-0 at the end of November and lost to the Islanders (at home) 5-4 in a shootout about two weeks before that.
One thing that Detroit is doing well lately is limiting the shots that goalie Jonas Gustavsson has to face; in their last seven games, the Wings have allowed 27 shots or fewer in six of them. That probably doesn’t bode well for an Islanders team that has 21 or fewer shots for in three of their last four games.
The home woes for the Red Wings continued in December, as they are 1-5 at the Joe this month, with their only win coming in overtime to the lowly Calgary Flames. In those six games, the Wings have scored just nine goals and their power play is an abysmal 8.3-percent. They have also allowed six power play goals against in those six games.
Both goaltending situations are a mess so I’m not a fan of anyone that starts tonight in this game, but it could be a source of a lot of cheap points considering the teams involved.
