Carolina Hurricanes at Tampa Bay Lightning
Despite no Steven Stamkos, the Lightning are putting together a very impressive December so far, accumulating 12 points in just nine games, which is a 109 point pace over a full season. They’ve done it a myriad of ways too: They’ve shutout their opponents, they’ve been shutout, and they’ve won and lost overtime/shootout games. For what it’s worth, this team has not relented since losing Stamkos, and they are 9-6-3 since he broke his shin.
The Hurricanes are playing back-to-back games, losing last night to Washington 4-2. The worrisome part is that their penalty kill had been 15-for-16 before that game, and they got drilled for three goals while short-handed.
These two teams met once already this year, but it was a 3-0 win for Tampa Bay when Stamkos was still in the lineup so it doesn’t tell us a whole lot. Tampa Bay, though, is one of the top home teams in the entire league, as they have as many regulation losses at home (3) as Boston, Pittsburgh and St. Louis. In other words, it’s not smart to put money against them.
This is two nights in a row for a ‘Canes team that isn’t too deep to begin with, so expect a low-scoring yet lop-sided affair. I will have Tampa goalie Ben Bishop in many lineups, as well.
