Boxing – Morilla’s Sunday Report Card for Dec. 15

Keith Thurman

Beibut Shumenov TKO 3 Tamas Kovacs, 12 rounds, WBA “super” light heavyweight title

In spite of his limited record, Shumenov (14-1, 9 KO) is a hero and a former Olympian for his native Kazakhstan, trying to make it big in the States, where he has recently relocated. After a few rocky performances, he’s taking on a few confidence-building fights before he takes on more dangerous opponents. In that spirit, he took care of Slovakia’s Kovacs (23-1, 14 KOs) in an expedited way, dropping his overmatched opponent in every round of the fight until the referee decided that he had seen enough and stopped the contest at 2:55 of the third episode. Not much to write home about this one, other than the return of a guy who should be fighting much more often if he really wants to make a name for himself in America.

The winner goes on to: After looking “accessible” as an opponent, you can bet he’ll be in the conversation for a fight against perennial champ Bernard Hopkins.
