According to Jon Heyman, the Boston Red Sox have reached a deal with catcher A.J. Pierzynski. The deal is for one year.

Pierzynski played 134 games last season with Texas. He hit .272 with 17 home runs and 70 RBI. The Pierzynski signing will give Ryan Lavarnway and top catching prospects Christian Vazquez and Blake Swihart more time to season in the minors. The Red Sox will enter next season with a David Ross/Pierzynski catching tandem. Pierzynski should be looked at as nice one-year placeholder until Boston’s younger catchers can make the leap to the Majors.
A.J. Pierzynski’s one-year deal with Boston is for $8.25 million, pending a physical.
