Toronto Blue Jays first baseman and designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion recently experienced soreness in his left wrist and the injury will require season-ending surgery, per ESPN.
Encarnacion has been one of the bright spots for the Jays this season. Hoping to contend in the competitive AL East, Toronto’s year was a sheer disaster. The team was out of contention long ago and currently sits at 69-81 – 22 games behind the division-leading Boston Red Sox.
The good news is that without structural damage, after sitting out and rehabbing for a couple of months, he should be as good as new. The first baseman is expected to be ready in plenty of time for Spring Training in 2014.
Encarnacion was unquestionably the team’s best offensive player this year. He leads the team in home runs (36), runs batted in (104), on base percentage (.370), runs (90), and hits (144). Encarnacion was an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2013 and his 36 bombs rank third in the major leagues this season.
