This Week’s Picks (matchups subject to change):
Monday, August 19:
Dillon Gee at MIN: Gee has never faced the Twins but enters the game with a 1.74 ERA and 11 K/3 BB over his last three starts. The Twins rank ninth in the American League in offense this month.
Tuesday, August 20:
Zack Wheeler vs. ATL: Wheeler has been great of late, putting up a 3.12 ERA and 21 K/6 BB over his last three starts (17.1 IP). He’s faced Atlanta twice in his rookie season, winning both games while putting up a 2.25 ERA and 12 K over 12 IP.
Chris Capuano at MIA: Capuano has seen a lot of the Marlins over his career, owning a 3.53 ERA over 94 IP against Miami. This Miami offense is worse than Capuano is used to, ranking 26th in the Majors in offense in August.
Jarred Cosart at TEX: Cosart has been brilliant since coming up to the Bigs, putting up a 1.15 ERA through six starts so I’ll stick with the young Astros’ starter until he falters.
Tyson Ross vs. PIT: Like Cosart, Ross has never faced his opponents but he’s been unstoppable of late, owning a 1.80 ERA and 23 K/7 K over his last three starts. The Pirates rank 25th in offense in the Majors this month.
Alex Cobb at BAL: Cobb has done well against Baltimore in two career starts, putting up a 2.31 ERA and 13 K/4 BB over 11.2 IP.
Sonny Gray vs. SEA: Gray only has two starts in his Major League career but has a 1.00 ERA on the season with 20 K/5 BB. The Mariners rank 12th in the American League in offense this month.
John Danks at KC: The Royals may be hitting better but Danks has always owned his AL Central rivals, putting up a 2.74 ERA over 75.2 IP.
Esmil Rogers at NYY: Rogers has been mostly terrible but has done well against the Yankees, putting up a 2.16 ERA with 6 K/0 BB over 8.1 IP.
Wednesday, August 21:
Jeremy Hellickson at BAL: Although he’s struggling, Baltimore always seem to bring out the best in Hellickson and the righty is 8-3 with a 3.09 ERA and 60 K over 90 IP against the Orioles.
Kevin Correia at DET: I don’t trust Correia and I don’t like starting pitchers against the Tigers but I’m willing to take the gamble here since Correia owns a 3.16 ERA with 12 K/2 BB over 26 IP versus Detroit and there aren’t many streaming options on Wednesday.
Jeremy Guthrie vs. CHW: Guthrie has been much improved in the last month or so and has always done well against the ChiSox, owning a 3.30 ERA with 67 K over 114 IP against them.
Ross Ohlendorf at CHC: Ohlendorf owns a 1.38 ERA and 10 K over his last 13 IP and has a 2.75 ERA with 25 K over 36 IP against the Cubs in his career. The Cubs rank dead last in offense this month, scoring just 45 runs over 16 games.
Thursday, August 22:
Joe Kelly vs. ATL: Kelly has been excellent this year, owning a 3.01 ERA on the season and a 2.70 ERA over his last three starts. In his only start against the Braves, Kelly pitched seven scoreless innings while striking out three.
Friday, August 23:
Ubaldo Jimenez vs. MIN: Jimenez has been very good lately, posting a 2.81 ERA and 17 K over his last three starts (16 IP). In four career starts against the Twins, Ubaldo owns a 3.25 ERA and 19 K over 27.2 IP. Minnesota ranks ninth in the American League in offense this month.
Todd Redmond at HOU: Redmond has been surprisingly good of late, putting up a 2.40 ERA and 14 K/3 BB over his last three starts (15 IP). In one start against the Astros, Redmond allowed just one run and three hits while walking just two and striking out 10 over six innings.
Martin Perez at CHW: Perez is hot of late, going 3-0 in his last three starts with a 2.42 ERA and 20 K over 22 IP. The White Sox rank eighth in the AL in runs scored in August.
Tom Koehler vs. COL: Koehler has faced the Rockies once before, surrendering just one run over seven innings and striking out seven.
Edinson Volquez vs. CHC: Volquez has had a very rough season but allowed just two runs in his last start and has always done well against the Cubs. In seven career starts against Chicago, Volquez is 5-0 with a 2.76 ERA and 39 K over 42 IP.
Charlie Morton at SF: Morton has been good lately, putting up a 2.70 ERA and 14 K over his last three starts (20 IP). In eight career starts against the Giants, Morton owns a 3.12 ERA and 37 K over 49 IP. San Francisco ranks 21st in the Majors in offense this month.
Saturday, August 24:
Randall Delgado at PHI: Delgado owns a 2.77 ERA against Philly over two career starts while the struggling Phils offense ranks 27th in the Majors this month.
Scott Kazmir vs. MIN: Kaz owns a career 3.32 ERA and 47 K over 57 IP against the Twins. Minnesota ranks ninth in the American League in runs scored in the month of August.

Jason Vargas at SEA: In two starts against his former team, Vargas owns a 2.40 ERA and 16 K/3 BB over 15 IP. The Mariners rank 12th in the American League in runs in August.
Tommy Milone at BAL: Milone has dominated the Orioles through two career starts, putting up a 0.69 ERA and seven strikeouts over 13 IP.
Sunday, August 25:
Mike Pelfrey at CLE: Pelfrey has been lousy this season but seems to do well against the Indians, owning a 2.31 ERA with 12 K/4 BB over two career starts against his AL Central rivals. Cleveland ranks 14th in offense this month.
Dan Haren at KC: Haren has been stellar lately, owning a 1.35 ERA with 16 K/4 BB over his last three starts (20 IP). He always does well against the Royals, owning a 2.53 ERA with 61 K over 67.2 IP versus Kansas City.
Ivan Nova at TB: Nova has been great, owning a 1.69 ERA with 21 K/3 BB in his last three starts. He’s performed well against the Rays in his career, putting up a 2.91 ERA with 56 K over 65 IP.
Jacob Turner vs. COL: Turner has done well all year, owning a 2.89 ERA on the season. In his only start against Colorado, Turner held the Rockies to two runs over six innings while striking out four.
