There is a change atop our MLB power rankings. That may not be news in itself, though the Cardinals have spent nearly a month enjoying the perch. The news is the team replacing them. The Pittsburgh Pirates are the best team in baseball for the first time since about the days of General Custer. Unlike last year, this team appears to be in it for the long haul.

Elsewhere in our rankings, the rest of the top 10 isn’t terribly different. The middle-of-the-pack teams are highlighted by two free-falling clubs from the American League East. The organization formerly recognized as the Yankees and the Toronto Ex-Marlins are heading in the wrong direction. Two teams from out west, meanwhile, are working their way toward the top half of the rankings.

A near second to the Pirates in the Sports Jerks Network Power Rankings newsworthiness comes from the bottom of the barrel. After a hard-fought couple months, the Houston Astros have finally overtaken the Marlins as the soon-to-be-seller in the cellar. It’s surely a proud day in Houston. At least the Astros know they can’t go any lower.
