Week 9 MLB Injury Report: Home Is Where The Hurt Is

MLB Injury Report

When it comes to the MLB inury report, whether its Sammy Sosa throwing his back out while sneezing or John Smoltz burning himself trying to iron a shirt (that he was wearing), the baseball season is always filled with (hilariously) unfortunate incidents off the field as well as on. This week, Ian Kennedy was forced to miss his start after cutting his finger while washing dishes (probably got some dish soap in that cut too, ouch), leaving many to wonder why he can’t use some of that $4.2 million he’s making to hire a maid. Not to be outdone, Clay Buchholz became the first player to miss a start due to a sleep related injury and we all know how dangerous that whole sleeping thing can be. Let’s take a look at when those two should be back and some considerably less amusing injuries in this week’s injury rundown.

Ian Kennedy (finger): Kennedy cut his hand washing dishes and had to miss his Monday start. At this point, he is expected to make his next start but check his status before reinserting him.

Clay Buchholz (collarbone): Buchholz had to miss his Monday start because he “slept awkwardly on his right side” and irritated his AC joint near his collarbone. He is likely to be ready to go by Thursday.

Shane Victorino (hamstring): Victorino was placed on the disabled list over the weekend to give him more time to heal his hammy. He will be eligible to return on June 5 but there is no word on whether he is expected to be ready by then.

Kyuji Fujikawa (forearm): Fujikawa never did return to his closer spot and has returned to the disabled list after straining the same forearm that caused him to miss nearly a month of the season already. At this point, he’s not going to be the Cubs closer anytime soon so he’s not worth keeping around except in the deepest leagues.

Chris Perez (shoulder): Perez has been laced on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right shoulder. He will rest for as long as a week before he is reevaluated. Vinnie Pestano is expected to take over ninth-inning duties until Perez can return.

Mike Moustakas (quad): Moustakas missed Monday’s game with tightness in his leg but was available to pinch hit so he likely wont miss more time with this. Of course, he’s batting .178 so some time off may not be the worst thing.

Jered Weaver (elbow): Weaver will be activated off the disabled list and start on Wednesday vs. the Dodgers.

Hanley Ramirez (hamstring): Ramirez has been healing up nicely and is expected to start a rehab stint sometime this week and return after about a week in the minors.

Kevin Slowey (back): Slowey was iffy for his next start with a sore back but has been cleared to go against the Rays on Tuesday. Slowey has a 3.30 ERA on the season but has given up 12 runs in his last 12.2 innings.

Ryan Braun (thumb): Braun was limited to pinch hitting duties on Monday as he deals with a thumb injury. He may have to sit out more or even all of the series against the Twins so be sure to check his status before starting him.

Kyle Lohse (elbow): Lohse had to miss his last start with an elbow injury but is expected to start Thursday against the Twins.

Jim Henderson (hamstring): Henderson has been placed on the disabled list with a hamstring strain just as he was in full dominance mode (nine saves, 0.92 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, 23 K). According to the Brewers, Henderson is expected to be out a while and Francisco Rodriguez and John Axford could both get some save opportunities.

Trevor Plouffe (concussion): Plouffe is expected to be activated and start on Wednesday against the Brewers.

Mark Teixeira (wrist): Tex is currently in extended spring training and is expected to return to the Yankee lineup as soon as Friday.

Curtis Granderson (finger): Just eight games after returning from a fractured forearm injury, Granderson was hit on the hand by a pitch and broke his knuckle. There is no timetable but he is expected to miss at least four to five weeks.

Josh Reddick (wrist): Reddick is in the minors rehabbing all week and is expected to return to the A’s lineup as soon as Friday.

Ben Revere (arm): Revere had to leave Monday’s game with arm soreness and while the X-ray came back negative he may sit out a couple.

Angel Pagan (hamstring): Pagan hasn’t played since Saturday with a sore hammy but could return to the Giants lineup on Tuesday.

Brett Lawrie (ankle): Lawrie will miss Tuesday’s game with a sprained ankle and may require a DL stint before he’s ready to go.

Danny Espinosa (wrist): Espinosa hasn’t played since Wednesday as he deals with a sore wrist but having intensified his workouts he is expected to be back in the lineup by Wednesday’s game against the Orioles.

Bryce Harper (knee): Harper missed Monday’s game with knee inflammation but shouldn’t miss more than a couple of days.

Ross Detwiler (oblique): The Nats placed Detwiler on the DL on Monday but the move is retroactive to May 15 so he could return to the rotation as soon as Sunday vs. the Braves.
