The work week is at an end and there is a full slate of MLB games tonight. So grab some food, claim your spot on the couch, and enjoy some baseball. And, since you’re watching anyway, why not join a daily fantasy baseball league over at Star Fantasy Leagues and get a 40% deposit bonus when you enter the promo code “SJN”? If you need help setting your lineup, maybe mine can offer you some guidance.
(C) Buster Posey $8,876 – Posey is continuing to show why he’s one of the best catchers in baseball this year and is hitting .409 with 2 home runs in the last week. He’s also 4-for-8 in his career against tonight’s opposing starter, Tim Hudson.
(1B) Paul Goldschmidt $7,974 – Goldschmidt did go hitless last night, but had 8 hits in his previous 4 games. And, tonight, he’s facing Tyler Cloyd, who is making his first start of the season after posting a 1-3 record with a 4.91 ERA in AAA.
(2B) Kelly Johnson $5,806 – Johnson has hit .407 in the last 7 days and is 4-for-12 lifetime against Edinson Volquez. He also comes at a very affordable price.
(3B) Evan Longoria $8,506 – Longoria has hits in 7 of his last 8 games and is coming off consecutive 3-hit performances. I see no reason to keep Longoria off of my team.
(SS) J.J. Hardy $6,208 – Hardy is hitting only .216 on the season, but does have a 6-game hitting streak. His 6 home runs on the year are also second most in all of baseball among shortstops, so he’s just about as big a power threat at the position as you’ll find.
(OF) Alex Gordon $8,064 – Gordon has hit in every game this week and, on top of it, has a home run in three straight games. He’s also a .308 career hitter against tonight’s opposing pitcher, Phil Hughes.
(OF) Will Venable $5,388 – It’s hard to get excited about too many Padres hitters, but we’ll roll with Venable tonight. He’s 6 for his last 11 and always has the potential to hit a home run or steal a base.
(OF) Carlos Gomez $9,912 – Gomez is one of the hottest hitters going right now. He is hitting .386 on the season and has a 14-game hitting streak. Last night, he went 4-for-4 and finished just a home run short of the cycle.
(U) Mitch Moreland $5,593 – Moreland has been a disappointment at times in Texas, but this is not one of those times. In the last week, he’s hitting .435 with 3 home runs and 4 RBI. This is a pretty good price for a guy hitting so well right now.
(SP) Max Scherzer $16,488 – Scherzer is the highest-priced pitcher going tonight and for good reason. His 54 strikeouts are sixth-most in the league. He’s also undefeated and very well may pick up another win tonight against Cleveland.
(SP) Alex Cobb $11,664 – Alex Cobb is putting together a very nice season with a 4-2 record and 2.79 ERA. He also has quality starts in 5 of his 6 outings this year and has a nice matchup tonight against San Diego.
(RP) Jim Johnson $2,361 – Johnson is tied for the Major League lead with 13 saves. Choosing a closer is always a gamble, so we might as well go with the guy who has more saves than almost anyone.
(P) Edward Mujica $2,013 – I’m trying a different strategy tonight. I usually go with a starter in this slot, but I’m going with another closer tonight. I can use the money I save on for a top tier starter and a couple offensive upgrades. Pitching for the team with baseball’s best record gives Mujica a good chance of getting a save opportunity. Of course, if he doesn’t get in, this strategy won’t work, but I’m going to give it a go.
