Frankie Gomez vs. Prince Doku Jr., 10 rounds, junior welterweights
Gomez (15-0, 11 KO) is a former amateur standout on the fast track to a world title shot, and he will try to follow up on his biggest win to date (a shutout of Lanard Lane back in February) with his first presentation in front of the always demanding Mexican fans. His foe in this first trip to the land of his ancestors will be Ghana’s Doku Jr. (18-3, 12 KO), a power puncher with a deceptive record who should give Gomez a test much harder than expected. This one shapes up as a very interesting fight for Gomez, who needs to start winning impressively if he wants to cash in on his big Golden Boy contract with a title shot in the near future.
What to look for in this fight: It would be nice to see some signs of progress in Gomez, who had a few very pedestrian wins in his record so far.
