Matt Simms
The good game/bad game pattern to Geno Smith’s rookie season hit a wall Sunday, as Geno followed up a bad game, with another bad game.
None of the numbers are pretty when it comes to Geno’s play recently, but one that looks worse than any other is his pass completion pattern. In his last three games, Geno hasn’t had a game where he completed double digit passes!
If you look at his passing touchdown to interception ratio in his past six games, he has thrown for one touchdown, while throwing ten interceptions.
Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan has already named Geno his starting quarterback Week 13, but if his play doesn’t improve, we might see more of Matt Simms under center.
Dominique Davis
Week 12 saw Falcons’ incumbent starting quarterback Matt Ryan finish the week as QB21, barely outscoring the likes of Scott Tolzien, and Kellen Clemens.
The Falcons have lost five straight games, and have been eliminated from the playoffs already, meaning they really have nothing left to play for other than pride, and player evaluation.
Following a Thursday Night Football loss to the New Orleans Saints, Falcons Head Coach Mike Smith mentioned how, “There are some guys who have done nice jobs, young guys that haven’t had an opportunity to participate in games or have a lot of participation. If they continue to work like they have, they’re going to get an opportunity to play on game day.”
There’s no mention of any players specifically by Smith, and the goal for the team still is to win games with established stars, but it wouldn’t be out of the question to see back-up quarterback Dominique Davis get some more playing time, and maybe even a late-season start.
The benefit to giving Davis a shot is two-fold: 1.) It would allow Ryan to rest up, and get ready for next season. 2.) It would allow the Falcons to see exactly what they have in the former undrafted quarterback.
We did get a chance to see Davis come in relief of Ryan once already this year, in Week 11 versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Davis did get injured during that game, but it wasn’t anything serious, and he was able to complete five of his seven attempts.
I’ve had my eye on Davis since last season’s preseason, where he went 33-of-56, for 402 passing yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. Davis earned the number two quarterback job in Atlanta that year, and it wouldn’t hurt the team to see if he can hold that job long-term.
Two games versus the Seahawks and 49ers, in Week 16 and Week 17, respectively, to close out the season await the Falcons, so the match-ups might not be all too enticing.
For now, keep your eye on Davis, just to see if they give him more playing time near the end of the season.
